Get Into The Water -- Another Worthy Cause
Hearing Dogs For Deaf People To Hold Unique Fundraiser At Winsford Flashes
(Jun 24 2009 by Dave Goodban, Mid Cheshire Chronicle)
"Volunteers are being asked to jump into the Winsford Flashes for charity – and get rescued by a 14-stone Newfoundland dog!
"Hearing Dogs for Deaf People (HDDP) has teamed up with Canis Major Newfoundland Dog Training Group. Animal lovers can embark on the fundraising fun day on Saturday July 25.
"HDDP spokeswoman Nicky Litchfield said: “Participants will be taken out by boat into the middle of the lake before jumping into the water, and being rescued by a hairy, but gentle, giant!”
"To take part, call Nicky on 01257 260988."

Lewis and Clark Officials Announce Casting and Sale of Last Halko Bronze, Lewis' Newfoundland Dog Seaman
(www.greatfallstribune.com)
"Great Falls is going to the dogs, but in a good way.
"A new statue of a famous dog will be placed during the next year or two outside the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Great Falls, officials announced Friday night at the sixth annual Lewis and Clark Outdoor Gala in Elks Riverside Park.
"The new project calls for erecting a life-size statue of Seaman, Meriwether Lewis' dog that accompanied the expedition as it traveled across the West. Sales of smaller versions of the statue will pay for the large bronze figure.
"Artist Joe Halko of Choteau created the clay model prior to his death a few months ago. It was Halko's last sculpting project before he died. 'Joe was a regular artist in our Outdoor Art Gala shows, ever since our beginning six years ago, so it really is quite fitting that he created the sculpture for the project', said Jay Russell, executive director of the center's foundation.
"Halko was well-known for creating the Heritage Honkers geese sculpture at the Region 4 Headquarters for Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks across the road from the center, and for the his work on the C.M. Russell Museum's Buffalo Hunt project.
The project was the brainchild of Dr. James and Carol Mungas, whose Newfoundland dog Windsor was a popular fixture with tourists during the early years of the center.
"Photos of Windsor served as the model for the sculpture. Russell noted the life-size version of Seaman won't be tiny. 'Those are big dogs', he said.
The foundation plans to sell Halko's smaller Seaman version, which measures 10 inches high and 11 inches long. The limited edition of 100 will sell for $895, but it is available for $750 for a limited time.
"Sales of the smaller bronzes will pay for the large statue. Russell said the large statue probably will be installed outside, just east of the Interpretive Center, in 2010. He said about a third of the bronzes will need to sell before the statue is erected.
"Seaman was a Newfoundland, a huge, shaggy black dog bought by Lewis for $20, which was a large sum of money 200 years ago. He served as a good hunter and guard dog during the expedition."

One Man And His Shadow
(westernmorningnews.co.uk - June 11, 2009)
"Watersports enthusiast Dave Stewart is used to turning a few heads when he goes out on his kayak. But it's not the sight of the Royal Marine commando, against the backdrop of the Royal William Yard, Plymouth, who grabs most people's attention, so much as the 55kg dog at the bow.
Shadow, Mr Stewart's one-year-old shaggy black Newfoundland, is as happy on the water as he is on dry land. But he admits the sight of the giant dog at the front of the kayak is a little incongruous. 'We usually go out and potter round Torpoint or go down as far as Mount Edgecumb', said Mr Stewart. 'If we go anywhere near the Torpoint ferry we do get a lot of people looking at us sideways. Some people nearly drive off the road when they see us.'
Despite their size, Newfoundland dogs are a breed used to working on the water's edge and were originally trained to haul nets in for fishermen.
Mr. Stewart, a father-of-four, decided to see whether Shadow would take to the water by ferrying him around shallow areas of the Tamar. 'I wanted to make sure that he would be okay if he fell in and that I could rescue him. But he loved it. If he's on the kayak and he wants to go in, he just goes in. Normally he just likes to sit up at the front and look like he's in control of the boat.'"

Archie The Newfoundland Is Honored
"Archie takes his celebrity in stride.
"Already a star of the Internet, the printed page and the small screen, Casa Pacifica’s 165-pound therapy dog appeared before the Ventura County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday to receive a proclamation in his honor.
It was a media event, with Archie fans inside the board room and camera crews in the aisles. The guest of honor sat at attention at first, but before long he lay on the floor as his human admirers sang his praises and declared it to be 'Archie Day'.
Archie lives with a Casa Pacifica employee and works every day at the home for abused, neglected and emotionally disturbed children.
The staff members and the residents of Casa Pacifica rave about Archie’s knack for comforting and calming children. It’s not unusual for the kids to talk to the dog before they’ll ever talk to the other people at the home.
'The one thing that most of these kids have in common is trauma, and Archie is an expert in trauma therapy', said Steven Elson, Casa Pacifica’s executive director.
'He really is a gentle soul', Supervisor Kathy Long said. 'It’s amazing the way he lets the children climb on him'.
Archie gained a bit of fame two years ago, when he needed surgery and his story was picked up by newspapers and television outlets around the world. Today, he is more celebrity spokesdog than a pet; he has a Web site, http://www.archiethedog.com, and a Facebook group, and he receives regular fan mail.
He’s also one of Casa Pacifica’s top fundraisers, with his story attracting thousands of dollars in donations.
And there’s another Archie on the way, in a sense. A member of Casa Pacifica’s board has commissioned a bronze statute of the massive Newfoundland dog, which will be unveiled on Sunday at Casa Pacifica’s annual Wine & Food Festival at CSU Channel Islands.
The bronze Archie will stay for a while at Gardens of the World in Thousand Oaks, and after that he’ll roam around the county. At every stop, he’ll be soliciting money for Casa Pacifica, with a spot for people to drop donations into."

Newfoundlands -- The Gentle Giants
Newfoundland: The Gentle Giant of the Canine World
(By Teddy Coleman)
"If you chance upon a Newfoundland in many ships in Canada, this indicates that sailors want additional safety. For those people who know the capacity of the Newfoundland, this information is agreeable. For those who are not quite familiar with the breed, be ready to agree.
"The Newfoundland breed is a native of Canada and it came from the northern place of the same name. The descendant of the Newfoundland is said to be the St. John dog, another local breed which is, up to this day, famous for admirable characteristics. In the 1400’s, accounts that told the existence of a superb water dog in the Great Banks of Newfoundland have been recorded so it means that the breed had been in existence for centuries now.
"Water rescue is the Newfoundlands forte and when it comes to swimming, it remains the champion. There are several records that prove of the Newfoundland’s supremacy in the water and it is further proven by many rescue events of today. One account shares a girl named Anne Harvey from Isle de Morts, her father and her Newfoundland Hairyman who altogether helped rescue 180 Irish immigrants from a ship wreck.
"During the early 1900s, a Newfoundland single-handedly saved 92 people from a sinking ship during a blizzard. Famous people are also recorded to be helped by the Newfoundland and this includes the famed Napoleon Bonaparte when he nearly drowned in his escape from the island of Elba. A Newfoundland of a fisherman jumped in to the sea and helped Bonaparte safety.
"The Wild West discoverers Lewis and Clark also brought with them during the quest a Newfoundland named Seaman. The Royal Rifles of Canada also have the Newfoundland as a hero and it is named Sgt. Gander. Sgt. Gander’s heroic deed happened in the Battle of Hong Kong when he sacrificed himself by means of carrying away the grenade that’s meant for the wounded soldiers.
"Some see the Newfoundland to look like the St. Bernard but it is actually the other way around. What separates the Newfoundland, however, is the fact that its feet are webbed and this helps him swim accurately and with great speed in the waters. Its lung can also endure severe long distances of swimming and this has helped him be successful in many rescue missions.
"Its coat is dense, oily and resistant to water that’s why he is able to stay in the freezing water even for hours on end. Other dogs swim in a “doggy paddle” but the Newfoundland swims in a breast stroke motion and this gives his swim more power and speed. Its lips and flews are droopy and it gives him the tendency to drool overly during hot days but in swimming, it allows him to breathe even if his mouth is full of water.
"Even though this dog’s size is enormous, its heart is full of benevolence, gentleness and kindness that people call him the 'Gentle Giant'. Towards its owner, it is very protective but never aggressive to any kind of human and animals. As quoted by Henry David Thoreau in Walden, 'A man is not a good man to me because he will feed me if I should be starving, or warm me if I should be freezing, or pull me out of a ditch if I should ever fall into one. I can find you a Newfoundland dog that will do as much.'"
